Almost Ready...

I am now about 2.5 hours away from departure and feel so unprepared! As I was trying to finish my packing today (it's still not done) I realized that a lot of people probably don't know exactly what it is I'll be doing for the summer so I thought I should explain quick:

I am on summer staff for Group Workcamps Foundation, an organization that offers Christians mission trips for teenagers. I went on them every summer when I was in high school and absolutely loved them. Starting May 26 I will be training in Estes Park, CO for 2 weeks and will then head off to begin work! As of now I do not know where that is. I'm told I will find out our first night at camp, but it could be just about anywhere in the US. I will be on a crew of 4 with whom I will travel and work with the entire summer until our end date, July 25. My official title is Crew Manager which leaves me in charge of assigning participants to crews of about 5 or 6 people and also assigning them to a worksite and arrange their transportation. No crew will have 2 people from the same youth group, so each participant has the chance to meet and spend the week working with youth from all over. The camp is not affiliated with any specific Christian denomination so therefore you also get to meet people from all sorts of denominations. I don't think I was ever on a crew in which there was more than 1 person from a specific denomination. It's also quite rare to be on crew with someone from the same state as you. However, one year I was on a crew in which THREE of us were from MN. One girl was even from Chatfield (about 20 miles away from me).

The camp week runs from Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning and I arrive with my crew the Wednesday before camp begins to help set-up. We then have from the end of camp until the following Wednesday to travel to our next site. We can site-see and everything along the way. During camp week there are morning and evening programs that involve a lot of singing! YAY! My favorite song is "Big House" and if you don't know it you should! Every week of camp for me was physically and emotionally draining but at the same time, when the camp weekwas over I felt completely rejuvenated. From what I understand I should expect no less than that in the position of summer staff. I've been told to expect to wake up about 6 am every day and go to bed about midnight. For a person that likes 8 hours of sleep every night this should be fun! :)

So, this will be my last post until I know where I'll be for the summer!

p.s. For those of you who feel "creepy" reading my blog and knowing so much of the personal side of Alyssa (cough David cough) don't feel creepy. Welcome to blogging! I won't put up anything I don't want the world to know, and my blog is open to anyone and everyone! :)
