This afternoon on the bus (full bus, it was during rush hour) I overheard a mother in the back quizzing her two boys on simple arithmetic. The quiz soon turned to tomorrow's election. The mother was attempting to have her children state the names and issues of the different local and national candidatese. Let's just say I now know exactly who that mom is voting for based on which ones the kids called "stupid." The mother tried to tell them it's not nice to call names, but then followed it up with, "but you're right, we're not voting for him/her tomorrow."
This scenario reminded me just how impressionable kids are. They have no reason to like or dislike these candidates, but do based on their parents. I'm not saying that's a terrible thing, and I'm sure it happens in most families. My dad could probably attest to me, as a child, liking all the candidates he supported and being mad at all the people who had signs in their yards for the opposite candidate. He even wrote about it in a Christmas letter years ago.
Back to the bus. I learned a lot from them today. In about 7 minutes I learned that Christine O'Donnell's new name is actually Christine McDonald. Also, John Stewart's running for governor along side Tom Barrett. Turns out Stephen Colbert's running too, as well as Stuart Little. What an educational bus ride. Why can't the morning news be that informative?
